Record High for Overnight Stays in Madeira
In April 2025, the Autonomous Region of Madeira achieved a historic milestone with over 1.09 million overnight stays in tourist establishments. This figure represents a 12.2% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the Madeira Regional Statistics Directorate (DREM).
The growth of tourism on the island was also notable in the number of guests, totaling 221.3 thousand, reflecting an 11.8% rise. This appetite for Madeira’s charms is not surprising, given the island’s stunning landscapes, mild climate, and rich culture.
Analyzing the source of overnight stays, the hotel sector stood out as the most significant segment, contributing 66% of the total, approximately 721.3 thousand overnight stays. This sector saw an increase of 6.7% compared to April 2024. Meanwhile, local accommodation, accounting for about 31.5% of overnight stays, performed even better with a 26% increase. Rural tourism, while representing only 2.5% of the total, also grew, with a positive change of 11.1%. These figures highlight the diversification and growing acceptance of different accommodation types by tourists.
In addition to the increase in overnight stays, the revenues from the tourism sector also showed significant growth, reaching 73.5 million euros, a rise of 22.2%. Revenues from accommodations rose to 54 million euros, with a 26.9% increase. These indicators suggest a clear and robust recovery of the tourism industry in the region.
It is noteworthy that to enable a more effective comparison with data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), DREM excluded local accommodation facilities with fewer than 10 beds, a methodology not used by INE. Furthermore, Easter 2025, which occurred in April, likely positively influenced the figures, as in 2024 the holiday took place in March, attracting a larger flow of tourists, especially national ones.
The appeal of Madeira as a tourist destination continues to grow, evidenced by its diverse accommodation portfolio and prime location, which includes the spectacular Island of Madeira and the tranquil Porto Santo. Regional authorities are aware of the importance of monitoring these indicators and aim to promote policies that ensure the continued growth of the sector while balancing the preservation of the region’s natural and cultural resources.
To reinforce sustainable and quality tourism, new initiatives are expected to increase accommodation capacity and promote innovative tourist products, thereby consolidating Madeira as a reference destination in the tourism world.
