Changes to teacher recruitment regime in Madeira
Regional Legislative Decree no. 8/2026/M introduces changes to the selection, recruitment, and mobility of teachers in the Region.
The fourth amendment to the legal regime for teacher recruitment in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (Regional Legislative Decree no. 8/2026/M) has been published. The new rules aim to provide greater stability to human resources and value professional experience.
The main changes include:
- Contract limitation: Successive fixed-term contracts cannot exceed three years, aiming to open vacancies in permanent staff positions.
- Teaching commitment: Increase from three to four years in the commitment period for teachers placed through internal and external competitions.
- Salary appreciation: Introduction of new salary indices (188 and 205) for contracted teachers with 1460 and 2920 days of service, respectively, subject to performance evaluation.
- Staff management: Extinction of pedagogical zone 2 and transition of teachers to the staff of the Professor Dr. Francisco de Freitas Branco Basic and Secondary School with Preschool and Nursery.
- Teaching component: Requirement of at least eight hours of teaching component for career teachers to remain in their respective schools.
