Regional Government amends rules for teacher service time recovery
The Legislative Assembly of Madeira has approved changes to the teacher service time recovery regime, clarifying criteria and including work periods outside the region.
The Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira has approved Regional Legislative Decree no. 6/2026/M, which introduces the first amendment to Regional Legislative Decree no. 23/2018/M. This measure aims to clarify interpretative doubts and ensure fairer treatment in the recovery of teaching service time not accounted for between 2005 and 2017.
Key new features include:
- The recovery of service time provided in public schools on the mainland and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, as well as in private educational establishments, provided it is duly certified.
- A specific schedule for the recovery of service time for teachers without a contract with the Regional Secretariat of Education: 1197 days on January 1, 2026, and 1196 days on January 1, 2027.
- Safeguarding career positioning for teachers who transitioned between different remuneration structures, ensuring progression to the 4th step upon completing fifteen years of service.
The diploma enters into force the day after its publication, reinforcing the regional commitment to valuing the teaching career.
