Regional Government defines strategic guidelines for fighting rural fires
The Regional Government of Madeira has published the strategic guidelines governing the new Integrated Rural Fire Management System, aiming to protect the territory and reduce fire risk.
The Presidency of the Regional Government has formalized, through Rectification Declaration no. 15/2026, the publication of the annex to Resolution no. 261/2026, which establishes the strategic guidelines for the Integrated Rural Fire Management System of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SGIFR-RAM). This system, created by Regional Legislative Decree no. 4/2026/M, focuses on the protection of people, property, and natural values through six fundamental pillars:
- Active Rural Space Management: Focus on reducing land abandonment and valuing biomass for energy purposes.
- Fuel Discontinuity Network: Creation of mosaics and fuel management strips to facilitate firefighting.
- Promotion of Safe Behaviors: Strengthening awareness among the population and the school community, focusing on the management of controlled burns.
- Early Detection: Optimization of the surveillance network with advanced technologies and coordination between entities for a rapid response.
- Efficiency in Risk Management: Implementation of special contracting and shared inspection measures between the IFCN and municipalities.
- Institutional Coordination and Adaptive Management: Technical training of agents and knowledge sharing in the Macaronesian region, based on continuous evaluation of results.
