Madeira updates fuel tax rates on petrol and diesel from 3 October

The Region has updated the unit rates of the tax on petroleum and energy products applicable to petrol, road diesel, and marked coloured diesel. The new rates take effect from 3 October 2026.

Madeira will apply new rates of the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (ISP) to petrol and two types of diesel. The update is set out in Ordinance No. 568/2026 of 1 October, which amends Ordinance No. 10/2015 and the rates previously established by Ordinance No. 534/2026.

The unit rates will be:

  • Petrol with a lead content of 0.013 or less, classified under codes NC27101141 to NC 27101149: 470.59 euros per 1,000 litres.
  • Diesel, classified under codes NC 27101941 to NC 27101949: 330.82 euros per 1,000 litres.
  • Coloured and marked diesel, classified under codes NC 27101941 to NC 27101949: 85.99 euros per 1,000 litres.

The Regional Government frames the change as part of the gradual unwinding of measures to mitigate fuel prices. The ordinance refers to the aim of balancing protection for households and businesses against fuel costs with the promotion of more sustainable consumption patterns. The legislation sets ISP rates but does not, in itself, specify a particular change to the final price paid by consumers.

Ordinance No. 568/2026 enters into force on the day after its publication, but takes effect from 5 October 2026.
