New Director Appointed for Madeira's Public Debt Management
João Pedro Sousa Lamim Viegas has been appointed to lead the Public Debt Management Department, on a three-year service commission.
The Regional Secretary for Finance, Duarte Nuno Nunes de Freitas, has appointed João Pedro Sousa Lamim Viegas to the first-grade intermediate management position of the Public Debt Management Department. The appointment was formalized through Dispatch No. 319/2026 from the Regional Secretariat for Finance.
João Pedro Viegas, a graduate in Economics with several postgraduate degrees in finance, will take up the position under a three-year service commission, effective from August 1, 2026. The appointment follows an open competition procedure announced by Notice No. 249/2026.
The new director has extensive experience at the Regional Secretariat for Finance, where he previously served as Head of the Financial Analysis and Information Division and, before that, as a senior technician. His resume includes complementary training in financial markets, portfolio management, and debt analysis, provided by institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and Columbia University.
The department he will lead is responsible for managing the direct regional public debt portfolio, structuring financing operations, and maintaining relationships with investors.
