The application to register 'Madeira Banana' as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) has been published, opening a 30-day period for objections.
The process to obtain European recognition for 'Madeira Banana' as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) has been formally initiated. The application was submitted by the 'Madeira Banana' Producers' Group, established within ACOESTE - Associação da Costa Oeste.
With the publication of Notice No. 408/2026, a national opposition period of 30 days is now open, during which any individual or legal entity with a legitimate interest may submit a reasoned statement of opposition to the registration.
According to the attached Single Document, the designation 'MADEIRA BANANA' covers fruits of Cavendish subgroup varieties produced on the Island of Madeira, as well as the processed products 'Dried Banana' and 'Banana Chips'. The product's specificity is attributed to the subtropical climatic conditions, volcanic soils, irrigation system via 'levadas' (traditional water channels), and the traditional know-how of Madeiran producers.
The documents supporting the application, including the Specification Booklet, are available for consultation at the offices of the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA) and the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DGADR).
