Regional Government Posthumously Praises José Manuel Melim Mendes for Contribution to Madeira
In a Resolution of the Regional Government Council (No. 112/2026), José Manuel Melim Mendes was publicly praised, posthumously. The tribute highlights his significant contribution to the sustainable development of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, his dedication to the preservation and enhancement of its history and cultural heritage, and the legacy left to future generations.
José Manuel Melim Mendes, a native of Funchal, held degrees in Chemical Engineering and Mining Engineering. From 1991, he developed his professional activity in Madeira, holding positions of great responsibility in crucial institutions for regional development. He was President of the Regional Agency for Energy and Environment of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (AREAM), President of the Science and Technology Center of Madeira (CITMA), and President of the General Assembly of ARM - Águas e Resíduos da Madeira.
The resolution underlines his remarkable role in promoting and developing alternative energies in the Region, decisively contributing to the introduction and affirmation of renewable energies in the archipelago and to the construction of a more sustainable future.
In addition to his technical and environmental contribution, José Manuel Melim Mendes was also recognized for his work in valuing and disseminating the history and culture of Madeira. Author of several works dedicated to regional history, he was a renowned collector of graphic documentation of the archipelago. His decades of work in collecting, preserving, and studying illustrated postcards of Madeira and Porto Santo, a documentary heritage of great historical and cultural value, stand out.
In 2021, he demonstrated a high public interest by donating about six thousand illustrated postcards to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, significantly enriching the collection of the Regional Archive and Library of Madeira.
The Regional Government considers this public recognition of José Manuel Melim Mendes' notable contribution to be "most elementary justice," particularly in the areas of energy, environment, and technological innovation, combined with a profound sense of public service and dedication to his homeland.
