Foster families will receive €324.36 per month for each person in their care, rising to double that amount in cases of severe dependency. The maintenance allowance increases to €320.43, with effect from 1 September 2026.
The Regional Government of Madeira has updated the amounts paid to families caring for older people or adults with disabilities. Order No. 421/2026 sets the monthly payment at €324.36 per person in care, rising to €648.72 where a situation of severe dependency has been duly confirmed.
The monthly maintenance allowance has been set at €320.43 per person. This amount does not cover expenses for medication, clothing, footwear or personal hygiene. These costs are the responsibility of the person in care or their family and, where they lack the means to cover them, may be subsidised by the Madeira Social Security Institute (Instituto de Segurança Social da Madeira, IP-RAM), following a technical assessment and in accordance with the applicable legislation.
The financial contribution from the person in care may not exceed 70% of their net monthly income and must not exceed the total cost of the payment and maintenance. Holiday and Christmas bonuses, or the corresponding pensions, are excluded from the calculation. Amounts paid by people in care constitute the Madeira Social Security Institute’s own revenue.
The update takes effect on 1 September 2026, but must not result in a retroactive increase in the contribution payable by people in care. The order repeals Order No. 146/2013, which set the previous amounts, unchanged since 2013. According to the document, the expected monthly increase in expenditure is €9,988.17, and the update also affects the calculation of financial support for informal carers.
