Regional Government praises canoeists and association for solidarity crossing

The Government Council approved a public commendation for the four athletes and the association promoting the solidarity crossing between Porto Santo and Madeira.

The Regional Government Council approved, at its meeting on July 23, a resolution to publicly commend a group of Madeiran canoeists and the association that organized a historic and solidarity crossing between islands.

The Regional Government Council Resolution No. 731/2026 highlights the feat of canoeists José Cristiano Perestrelo, João Carlos de Lima, José Miguel Figueira and Luís Filipe Nascimento, who completed, on June 19, 2026, an unprecedented crossing between the islands of Porto Santo and Madeira in a traditional canoe.

The document also emphasizes the role of the 'Maratona à Descoberta - Cultural Association', the promoting entity of the initiative, which gave it a significant solidarity character. The funds raised by the action were used to support the recovery of a Madeiran citizen who was a victim of a severe stroke (CVA).

The Regional Government considers that this achievement, carried out in the year marking the 50th anniversary of the Region's Autonomy, contributed to enhancing the prestige of Madeira and constitutes an example of the values of sport, solidarity and citizenship.
