Animal Ombudsman presents 2025 activity report
The Animal Ombudsman of the Autonomous Region of Madeira released the 2025 report, highlighting the management of 302 cases and the need for a dedicated budget.
The Animal Ombudsman, João Henriques de Freitas, presented the activity report for the year 2025, in compliance with Regional Legislative Decree no. 12/2021/M. During the period under review, 302 new cases were initiated, with a resolution rate of 74.17%.
Case Distribution
- Complaints/Reports: 41 cases (13.58%), mostly regarding canines (90.24%).
- Support Requests: 242 cases (80.13%), focused on awareness and support for guardians with financial or logistical difficulties.
- Information Requests: 19 cases (6.29%), involving requests from the Ombudsman to external entities and requests from citizens to the Ombudsman.
Funchal leads in the number of cases (131), followed by Santa Cruz (44) and Câmara de Lobos (30). The report also points out the lack of a dedicated budget, as stipulated in Regional Legislative Decree no. 12/2021/M, which limits the Ombudsman's intervention capacity.
