Government increases mental health beds in two partner institutions
The Regional Government authorized changes to cooperation agreements to increase psychiatric inpatient capacity at Casa de Saúde Câmara Pestana and Casa de Saúde São João de Deus, with retroactive effect from January 2026.
Faced with growing demand and insufficient public capacity, the Government Council approved changes to two cooperation agreements fundamental to mental health in Madeira. Resolution No. 828/2026 authorizes:
- The third amendment to the Cooperation Agreement with the São João de Deus Institute (Casa de Saúde São João de Deus), signed on July 20, 2007, to integrate 50 more beds.
- The second additional deed to the Cooperation Agreement with the Institute of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Casa de Saúde Câmara Pestana and the Sagrada Família Psychopedagogical Rehabilitation Center), signed on September 26, 2008, to integrate 33 more beds.
These changes, which have retroactive effect from January 1, 2026, aim to regularize a de facto situation, in which the institutions had already been accommodating a number of users higher than initially contracted, due to clinical referrals from the Regional Health Service. The decision is based on the imperative need to respond to mental health care shortages in the Region.

Adaptations are being considered at the Porto da Cruz Nursing Home and São Roque Community Centre to accommodate people who are medically fit for discharge but cannot return home for social reasons. The number of places has not yet been set, and the works have not been authorised.
