Caniçal Port keeps transitional ship berthing rules in place until May 2027
The Regional Government has extended until 31 May 2027 the transitional rules allowing certain ships to berth at the north and south quays of Caniçal Port. The measure will be reviewed when the technical studies are complete, or earlier if the necessary conditions are met.
The transitional rules for ships berthing at the north and south quays of Caniçal Port have been extended until 31 May 2027 at the latest. The decision is set out in Regional Government Council Resolution No. 932/2026, approved at a plenary meeting on 1 October.
The rules, initially established by Regional Government Council Resolution No. 756/2025 of 6 October, temporarily allow ships up to 141 metres long to berth at the north quay and ships with a beam of up to 23.2 metres to berth at the south quay. In both cases, vessels must have the technical characteristics needed to carry out berthing and unberthing manoeuvres safely.
The extension remains in force while technical studies are carried out on the operating and safety conditions of the port infrastructure and on the possibility of amending the Operating Regulations for the Ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The resolution stipulates that the measure must be reviewed at the end of the transitional period, or earlier if the necessary conditions are met.
The Government says the rules are being maintained to ensure the port's operational capacity and meet the Region's maritime freight transport needs while the technical assessment is still under way.
