Regional Government approves new Higher Education Scholarship Regulations

The Government Council approved a new scholarship regulation, which comes into force in the 2026/2027 academic year, revoking the previous one from 2025.

The Regional Government of Madeira approved, this Friday, a new legal framework for awarding scholarships to higher education students. The measure aims to update the support criteria in light of the current economic and social reality, promoting greater social justice and effectiveness in the distribution of funds.

Resolution of the Regional Government Council No. 836/2026 approves the new Scholarship Regulations of the Regional Government of Madeira for supporting attendance in higher education courses. This document revokes Resolution No. 683/2025, of September 8, which established the previous regime.

Among the main justifications for the revision are the successive updates to the minimum wage and the Social Support Index, which can exclude families with real economic difficulties, and the significant increase in housing costs, especially for students who move outside the Region. The new regulation also enshrines the possibility of applications exclusively electronically, through a digital platform, promoting dematerialization and simplification of procedures.

The new regime takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic year.
