Madeira Government Sets Minimum Price for Sugar Cane for 2026
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries has set the minimum price to be paid to sugar cane producers for this year's campaign at 620 euros per tonne.
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, has determined the minimum value to be paid to Madeiran farmers for sugar cane delivered for processing in the 2026 campaign. The measure aims to ensure fair remuneration for producers, fitting within the support for the regional agricultural sector.
According to Dispatch No. 297/2026, the minimum price is set at six hundred and twenty euros per tonne, calculated based on the average saccharimetric degree of 15º Brix. This annual definition is a requirement of Ordinance No. 363/2015, which applies specific community aid for the outermost regions.
The dispatch came into force the day after its publication, but its effects are retroactive to March 1, 2026, the date marking the start of the harvest. This decision has a direct impact on the regional agricultural economy, ensuring stability and predictability for producers of one of Madeira's traditional crops.
