The Regional Government of Madeira decided, in a Council meeting held on July 15, 2026, to publicly praise Madeiran athlete Sofia Maria Silva Ferreira. The distinction, formalized through Regional Government Council Resolution No. 698/2026, recognizes the "excellent sporting result" achieved by the athlete by winning the 2025/2026 Portuguese Cup, in the senior women's category, in the sport of handball, representing Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
The official document underlines that the achievement "brought prestige to the Autonomous Region of Madeira." The public commendation is an administrative act that aims to recognize and value notable deeds by citizens or institutions that contribute to the prestige of the region.
Athlete Sofia Maria Silva Ferreira thus joins a list of Madeiran personalities publicly distinguished by the Regional Government for their sporting, cultural, or scientific achievements.
The Regional Directorate for Sport has awarded Barreirense Sports Club funding of up to €6,265.04 to take part in regional football and futsal competitions in the 2025/2026 season. Payment depends on submitting eligible expenses and meeting the obligations set out in the agreement.
