Expressive results in Madeira
In a clear demonstration of internal unity, José Luís Carneiro garnered 99.66% of the votes from Socialist Party militants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira during the internal elections held on June 27, 2025. The voting took place in eleven municipalities, covering all parishes of the main island and Porto Santo, with a turnout of 60.77% of registered voters.
National dynamics of the PS
At the national level, José Luís Carneiro presented himself as the sole candidate for Secretary-General, advocating the motion “Listening and giving voice to the People.” This election comes in the context of internal repositioning of the PS following their defeat in the legislative elections of May 2025, where the party lost its status as the main opposition force and fell to third place in parliamentary representation, despite maintaining second place in terms of votes.
Alignment and internal support
Carlos César, current president and interim Secretary-General of the PS, expressed unconditional support for Carneiro’s candidacy, emphasizing his ability to revitalize the party, both in Madeira and in the country. César highlighted the importance of renewing the PS without excluding valued militants, adapting it to economic, social demands, and citizens’ expectations.
Regional priorities
On a regional level, José Luís Carneiro is committed to strengthening Madeira’s autonomy and promoting the revision of the Regional Finance Law, addressing longstanding demands for greater political and financial autonomy. This plan aims to ensure a strengthened status for the Autonomous Region and secure the necessary resources for local development.
Future prospects
The high turnout and nearly unanimous support reflect the confidence of Madeira’s socialists in José Luís Carneiro’s project, which is based on internal cohesion and preparation for the upcoming local elections. The main challenges lie in consolidating the party and asserting a solid political alternative against the AD coalition.
