Reaction of CDS to Possible Withdrawal
The CDS dismissed any negative consequences for the PSD/CDS coalition should José Luís Nunes choose to withdraw from the Funchal City Hall race. The party believes there is no alternative to collaborating with the PSD for the 2025 municipal elections in the Madeira capital.
Decision of José Luís Nunes
The pediatrician and president of the Funchal Municipal Assembly confirmed that he is considering stepping back from the candidacy. He communicated this intention to the leader of PSD Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, but will continue serving in the Assembly until he makes a final decision.
Although he admits he has almost decided not to proceed, José Luís Nunes requested time to reflect and has not disclosed the reasons for questioning his own candidacy.
Instability and Strategic Silence
This uncertainty introduces some instability into the PSD project since Nunes’ list included representatives from the CDS. To date, no formal coalition agreement has been established between the two parties.
In light of the controversy, the CDS has adopted a posture of silence and patience. Party leader José Manuel Rodrigues stated that the party will await developments before making any further comments.
Prospects for Joint Candidacy
Despite this temporary setback, the CDS remains confident in the continuity of the agreement with the PSD for the 2025 municipal elections in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, assuring they are prepared to find solutions together.
