PSP Officer Stabbed During São Pedro Festivities
On Sunday night, a 24-year-old officer from the Public Security Police (PSP) was the victim of a violent attack during the São Pedro festivities in the village of Ribeira Brava, located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The young officer, who is linked to the Lisbon Metropolitan Command, was on the island vacationing with his family when he noticed a brawl happening at the event.
Determined to restore public order, the officer identified himself as a member of the PSP. Unfortunately, during his intervention, he was attacked by an individual from Câmara de Lobos, who has a known and significant criminal background. The assailant delivered between six to eight stab wounds to the young man, one of which was particularly serious, as it punctured his lung.
Following the attack, the officer was quickly transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where he received treatment and remains hospitalized in stable condition under intensive monitoring. The incident, deemed “cowardly and violent” by the Regional Delegation of the Police Professionals’ Union (ASPP/PSP), has sparked waves of concern and solidarity for the injured officer. This event alarmed not only the PSP but also the community of Ribeira Brava, which was participating in traditional festivities.
The Judicial Police have taken over the investigation of the case and have already identified the suspect. Authorities are looking into the circumstances that led to this brawl and the subsequent attack on the officer. This incident occurs amid growing concerns about public safety in Madeira, where popular events have become targets of increased surveillance, especially considering the rise in violence during certain occasions.
The next steps include continuing the criminal investigation and monitoring the health status of the injured officer. This case raises questions about the security measures to be implemented during public events, aimed at protecting both law enforcement officers and participants in the festivities.
