Beginning in July 2025, the Autonomous Region of Madeira will implement a comprehensive fire prevention and response system to address the rising incidents of forest fires. This new initiative will involve 53 teams and 158 personnel available 24/7, focusing on continuous prevention.
This enhancement comes in response to 42 fires recorded in the archipelago since early June, highlighting Madeira’s vulnerability to forest fires, exacerbated by its geographic and vegetation characteristics. The island’s rugged terrain and dense vegetation pose unique challenges, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, making effective prevention crucial.
In addition to operational resources, Madeira has invested in awareness campaigns, such as the annual “A Safe Forest Depends on All of Us.” This initiative aims to engage the population in responsible and sustainable practices, recognizing that forest protection is a collective responsibility.
The strategy for reinforcement is not limited to increasing human resources; it also signifies greater coordination between local and national entities. Legal measures arising from fire events have been pivotal in promoting an integrated approach to prevention and response, aligning with best practices suggested by experts in the field.
The Regional Government of Madeira stresses the importance of this initiative to safeguard not only the populations but also the ecosystems and the local economy, especially during the summer, a critical period for forest fires. There will be continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of the personnel and resources used, ensuring a swift and effective response to any potential threat.
With this reinforcement, Madeira aims to significantly reduce the impact and extent of fires, thereby promoting greater safety and resilience for the island, including Porto Santo and its parishes. The commitment to environmental protection and the well-being of the population remains a priority for the Autonomous Region.
