Two years after its official announcement, the “Casa Própria” program in the Autonomous Region of Madeira remains without practical results, prompting strong criticism from Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP).
Absence of Applications and Lack of Regulation
Created in July 2023, this instrument aimed to address the housing shortage on the island, but so far it has not allowed any interested party to submit a proposal for acquisition or rental. The absence of regulatory legislation has hindered the operation of the program, leaving the construction of public housing unfulfilled.
Criticism of the Regional Executive
The president of JPP, Lina Pereira, described the situation as a “total failure” and criticized the PSD/CDS coalition for an “insufficient and frivolous” response to the housing urgency. In the party’s view, no effective measures have been presented to increase the availability of affordable housing.
The argument of political instability, cited by the Government to justify delays, was refuted by Lina Pereira, who attributes the source of disturbances to the PSD itself, since January 2024, and directly holds the party responsible for the lack of housing solutions.
Social Impact and Future
In a context of worsening access to housing due to rising financing costs, JPP warns of the social consequences of a program without practical application. The investment, managed by EPERAM, remains inert, with no housing delivered to the most vulnerable families.
In light of the current scenario, JPP promises to continue monitoring the execution of the “Casa Própria” and demands concrete responses from the Regional Government that will reverse the situation of housing scarcity in Madeira.
